How patients opt in to Harper

Last updated: June 2026

Harper is a text-message companion offered to patients by their hearing clinic, operated by Oto Health. It sends supportive check-ins while a patient settles into new hearing aids, and replies when a patient texts back. This page documents exactly how a patient opts in and how they stop.

Step-by-step opt-in

  1. At a fitting or follow-up appointment, the clinician describes Harper and asks whether the patient would like to receive supportive text messages while they adjust to their new hearing aids.
  2. If the patient is interested, clinic staff enter the patient's first name, last name and cell number into the Harper dashboard. This only triggers an opt-in text — it does not enroll the patient.
  3. Harper sends the patient a single opt-in request (shown below). The patient must reply YES from their own phone to start. Their reply is the consent record, stored with a timestamp.
  4. Only after the patient replies YES does Harper send a welcome message and begin the check-in schedule. A patient who does not reply YES receives no further messages.

Opt-in request the patient receives

Hi [First name], your clinic [Clinic name] set you up with Harper — friendly check-in texts from Oto Health while you settle into your new hearing aids. Reply YES to start. Texts aren't secure — anyone with access to your phone could read them. Msg frequency varies; msg & data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help, STOP to cancel.

The consent you give

When the clinic offers Harper, the patient agrees — by providing their cell number — to the following. This is the consent language the clinic states at the point of opt-in:

Sample messages

  • Opt-in confirmation (welcome) Hi [First name] 👋 I'm Harper, your hearing-aid adjustment companion from Oto Health, set up by your clinic. New aids take a bit of getting used to — that's completely normal. Just text me whenever something feels off or you've got a question. Msg frequency varies; msg & data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help, STOP to opt out.
  • Scheduled check-in Hi [First name] — three days in. How many hours did you wear them yesterday? And what was the hardest situation? (Reply STOP to opt out.)
  • Conversational reply That whistling is usually the dome not seating quite right — try gently pressing it back in. If it keeps happening, your clinic can fix it in a minute. How's the wear time going?
  • HELP reply Harper (by Oto Health): Harper sends supportive check-ins while you settle into your new hearing aids. For help, email support@joinoto.com. Reply STOP to unsubscribe. Msg & data rates may apply.
  • STOP reply Harper (by Oto Health): You've been unsubscribed and will receive no more messages. Reply START to resubscribe. For help, email support@joinoto.com.

How patients opt out

A patient can stop all messages at any time by replying STOP. They receive one confirmation and then no further messages. Replying START resubscribes them, and HELP returns a short help message. Patients can also email support@joinoto.com.
